BRITE BOX

Building Resilience In Today’s Environment, is our meal kit project delivered across primary schools in Southwark

What is BRITE Box?

It is a weekly activity that includes a meal recipe kit with all ingredients provided. This enables families to prepare and eat a different balanced meal together each week. It is bringing families together around food in the home sparking joy and interest in cooking & healthier eating. It provides children (and adults!) with key cooking skills and the self-confidence to use them.

How does it work?

The boxes are packed and distributed from the South London Mission to your schools on the Friday afternoons. to be received before school pick up.

The boxes are smaller than the breakfast boxes, therefore easy to carry and contain enough food to prepare a meal for a family of five.

Each school will receive boxes for one year group and can the project can be linked to learning outcomes as a means of de-stigmatising  the receipt of food for a family.

BRITE Box also encourages parent participation within learning at home and at the end of the project the class could come up with a menu for Brite Box to use in the future.

What our schools say about BRITE box

School 1

The average number of family size is 4/5. Feedback - I am not sure where to start, although you have only been delivering to us for a short time, we are totally amazed by what you are doing!  Its fantastic, the children love it, I had received some beautiful photos of families cooking together.  Thank you so much for doing what you do

School 2

I also wanted to let you know how much the children have been getting out of the project. I have had 2 children completely independently and very proudly bringing in a portion of what they had made at home to show me and to share. It is lovely to see the pride that it gives them. They are also talking about the adults in their home who they have been doing their cooking with. One child said "I wasn't allowed to go in the kitchen before, but now I have shown my mum that I'm responsible and I was even allowed to help my sister one day make a different meal and she said I'm getting to be a big help now."

Thank you again to you and the charity for all of your kindness and support. It is very much appreciated.

School 3

We chose a different Year group this time (Y5), looking specifically for families of larger numbers, families who we knew were struggling on low wages, those who are vulnerable or with additional needs and high pupil premium numbers. About a third of the class come from larger families, often with members from older generations also living with them,  there are 11 children in receipt of pupil premium, there are 15 vulnerable/ additional needs children. There are a number of lower incomes and single parents.

Again, all feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, even with harder to reach families. It is a pleasure to see the photos of families who sometime struggle to communicate with their children really taking time to enjoy the cooking. There have been changes to the menus, swapping of some ingredients and different families cooking together.
